2026-05-13Wind conditions in Sicily
The wind in Sicily blows at 12-25 knots for 8-9 months of the year (March-November). The best conditions occur in two periods: April-June and September-October.. The Sirocco (southwest wind) reaches speeds of 15-20 knots and blows 40-50 days a year. The Mistral (northwest wind) is stronger and reaches 20-30 knots. Water temperatures are 18-20°C in May, 24-26°C in July-August, and 22-24°C in September. 3/2 mm foam is used in May-June and September-October. Shorty foam is sufficient in July-August.
Lo Stagnone – the perfect spot for families
Lo Stagnone is a 2,000-hectare lagoon with water depths of 0.5-1.5 meters. The wind blows from the north at 15-20 knots 200 days a year. The flat water, without waves, is ideal for beginners and families with children.. The lagoon is protected from waves and strong currents. Current speeds do not exceed 0.2-0.5 km/h, eliminating the risk of being swept far from shore. Children aged 8-12 can stand on the bottom 200-300 meters from shore.. The water temperature in Lo Stagnone is 2-3°C higher than in the open sea due to the shallowness of the lagoon. In July and August, the water reaches 26-28°C, allowing for kitesurfing without a wetsuit.
Why Sicily is for families
Sicily offers many benefits for families with children aged 8-16:
Shallow water in the lagoon Sicily’s lagoons are 0.5-1.5 meters deep at a distance of 200-300 meters from shore. The flat water, free of waves, allows for safe learning to kitesurf.
No strong currents The lagoons are protected from currents. Current speeds do not exceed 0.2-0.5 km/h. Kitesurfing zones are located 100-300 meters from the shore.
Combining kitesurfing with tourism Families combine kitesurfing (2-3 hours per day) with sightseeing. Sicily offers tourist attractions within 15-50 km of kitesurfing spots. Examples include ancient temples, nature reserves, and medieval towns.
